Evaluation Question 1: GENRE CONVENTIONS

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I have also made a Yudu of this presentation and can be found here.

1. A film promotional package would include our trailer, poster, and magazine. This would be because it would create an interest into our film to decide if they would want to come and see the whole film. Secondly, this would be used to cause a hype towards the film up until the release date to bring as much attention to people.

Our target audience would be aged between 15-30

2. Our film trailer would roughly be around 2 minutes

3. The USP in our film would be the different uses of camera shots. For example, we have included a drone shot which gives our trailer a better establishing shot. Another USP to our trailer would be the use of technology such as filming it on a 4k display camera which can therefore be viewed at even higher definitions.

4. The production company ident that my group has made is called 'Blonde Productions' which would appear at the beginning of the trailer with a small animation.

5. Our films genre is an action based thriller which would be portrayed by using lots of short cuts in the trailer giving it a greater sense danger in each scene and what may happen next in the actual film. This was done because we want to show the dangers on the film without giving the plot away too much so that way it can grip the audience. Secondly, in the dangerous scenes there would be darker lighting, such as in the woodlands where we film some scenes which would portray a sense of danger. The main protagonists are given similar screen time so that the audience can get a general idea of who the main characters are and their aims in the film.

6. There is minimal dialogue in the trailer where there is a main character speaking which would be at the beginning. After this, the rest of the trailer would have music in the background which would relate to the dangers as it’s an aggressive sound track which links up with the dangers within the film.

7. We have included a wide range of shots such as a bird’s eye view shot which came from the drone, we have also used pan shots which then lead to an over the shoulder shot which would then focus in on a main character looking at their phone. Along with this, there have been tracking shots of characters running in the forest. There have been reaction shots of the main characters of when they are having to face their challenges and may feel uneasy about undergoing the challenge they must face.

8. Throughout our trailer, we have tried to maintain a rapid pace along with hard cuts when there would be a dangerous scene building up to a dramatic event. Therefore, we have used ellipsis editing techniques so that we don't give too much of the story away so that we can grip the audience’s attention.

9. Creating enigma would be important because we would want the audience to wonder what may happen next. Such as knowing what may happen to the main characters after they have been drugged and what consequence they may face because of the risks that they have taken, then wanting to know which of them will make it out from being drugged.

10. In the trailer, all the puffs and titles would appear at the end because if the trailer gripped the audience they would be wanting to know what the film is called. Therefore, the puffs, titles and credits would be the last thing they would see making it easier for them to remember the name of the film if it came last along with the release dates. Secondly, all this information would be on our film posters and our magazines, such as the release dates, puffs, awards, reviews and all our social media and website.

11. During filming the effective parts that we filmed would be the ones that we would plan properly and have a clear idea of what we are filming and why. This is because when it came to editing it, it would make it a lot easier to understand what scene would go where and why. Therefore, this made editing effective because we could know what scenes we would need to do and then cut them down to make them shorter so it would increase the pace of the trailer with shorter cuts.

I have researched other media texts and can demonstrate that my research has influenced my production out come. For example, here is how I used, developed and challenged genre conventions against my film poster which is influenced from the poster "You and your bright ideas" Film poster.
